Arsenal, The Real Ammo Factory
This is the Lake City Army Ammunition plant in Lake City, MO. Producing nearly 1.4 billion bullets (5.56mm, 7.62mm, 50mm, and 20mm rounds) in 2006 alone, the Lake City Army Ammunition plant is the world’s largest small caliber munitions plant in the world. Since Sept 11, 2001, when the US War on Terror began, production of bullets has sky rocketed by over 300% at the munitions factory, which is now producing almost 6 million bullets per day. With such a demand by the US military for ammunition, bullets are currently in some cases being shipped directly to the field instead of to stockpile depots.
Since 1941, the plant has produced almost 50 billion rounds of ammunition, and currently employs over 2,000 employees. The work force at the plant consists of local people, many who are 3rd and 4th generation employees. The Lake City Army Munitions plant is owned by the US government and operated by Alliant Techsystems (ATK) on a fixed price contract.
